Our Website Design Doesn't Need Websafe Fonts
by Dave Bates 22 July 2010 16:07

Websafe fonts in website designs are a pain. Developing a client brand with complete freedom and then being constrained by what web browsers will render is more than annoying. When we create a beautiful Flash websites it's not something that we have to worry about, but with HTML websites it is a whole different story, until now.

Websafe fonts are now a thing of the past thanks to the guys at typekit.com We are able to pay more attention to font usage on a website and produce sites for our clients that will render in the way we want with the fonts we want.

However, there are still limitations. Many of the font foundries are still not happy to release their fonts for online usage. The reason why? Piracy. Jason Smith at Fontsmith points out. ’Even though browsers can now support embedded fonts, it’s still too easy to steal them. [A viable solution is] about five years away,’ he reckons.

So the solution is not complete, but we are certainly moving in the right direction, the choice we have now is still infinately better than what we had before.

The One That Got Away

Naturally everything we do doesn't see the light of day. This is a website design project that we worked on recently. Sadly it did not see us appointed, but we thought we would show it anyway because it had some really unique and innovative features to engage the audience.
